TREATMENT OF PSOROIATIC ARTHRITISTreatment Options Treatment of psoriatic arthritis is for both the skin condition and the arthritis. For mild psoriatic arthritis the treatment plan usually is comprised of medication, physiotherapy and daily-living adjustments. Your active involvement in developing your prescribed treatment plan is essential. • Skin care • Light treatment (UVB or PUVA) • Corrective cosmetics • Medications: glucocorticoids, NSAIDs, DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) such as methotrexate, sulfasalazine, gold, cyclosporine. • Exercise • Rest • Heat and cold • Splints • Surgery (rarely) Drugs for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis can be divided into the following categories: • NSAIDs….. (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs): This includes over-the-counter medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen as well as prescription products; the main purpose of these medications is to decrease the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis, including inflammation, joint pain and stiffness. • DMARDs….(Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs): These medications relieve more severe symptoms and attempt to slow or stop joint and tissue damage and progression of psoriatic arthritis. • Biologics: These are new drugs that block the immune system from producing the inflammation that may lead to joint and tissue damage. • Other Approaches: Heat for stiffness, warm water soaks; ice for swelling; exercise programs and physical therapy also are used in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis. • Alternative Methods: While generally not included in a patient's medical plan, some people have found relief through through alternative treatments. |
