ARTHRITIS………….. HOPE AND FREEDOM!Arthritis is a very complex disease afflicting hundred of millions of people worldwide. But there is “HOPE and FREEDOM on the HORIZON”. The recent clinical, long term studies, have demonstrated beyond doubt that glucosamine and chondroitin are indeed disease modifying agents for painful Osteoarthritis, the type that afflicts majority of persons suffering from arthritis. In other words, these agents help to generate cartilage in a slow but sure way. And that helps in the increased flexibility, mobility of a person. Resulting reduction in stiffness of joints and pain leads to a more comfortable life giving hope to millions for greater freedom of daily activities which were just dreams before. We call this a Real Hope and Freedom to millions of sufferers. The traditional medicines, Cox-II Inhibitors such as Celebrex™ and Vioxx ™ and Bextra™ reduce joint pain effectively. But the many adverse effects prominent among those resulting in heart related disease and deaths have resulted in Vioxx™ being withdrawn from the US market. I believe the others are to follow sooner or later. The other prominent category for joint and other pain reduction includes NSAIDS such as Aleeve™, Naprosyn, Ibuprofen (Motrin™) etc., have shown that they cause stomach bleeding lead to some ulcers. The Most popular, Tylenol™(acetaminophen) when improperly taken in excess or repeatedly can cause or exacerbate serious liver problems especially in older persons who normally are the ones with Arthritis. These drugs treat the SYMPTOMS rather than the CAUSE of pain. So Arthritis sufferers have a disappointing and somewhat dangerous issue with these medications that are prescribed to them so freely. A good question is then, if for a mild to moderate arthritis, these drugs are prescribed is it in violation of Physician’s Hippocratic Oath to “DO NO HARM”? And who bears the ultimate responsibility the pharmaceutical companies, politicians?? In future articles we shall illuminate and highlight the right approaches to treating arthritis with lasting results to sufferers giving them “HOPE and Freedom……….” |
